Sarah is named in the promise

Genesis 17:16 gives Sarah more than a place beside Abraham.

We should not tell Abraham’s covenant story as though Sarah stood outside it. If you have heard the promise told mainly through Abraham, pause over how Genesis names her.

Sarah in the text

God says twice that he will bless Sarah, says that a son will come through her, and speaks of nations and kings descending from her.

We want to let the text give Sarah the place it gives her, without turning her into a supporting figure in someone else’s blessing.

Read it for yourself

Read Genesis 17:15–21, especially verse 16, and notice the repeated blessing.

Watch the short and read Sarah’s blessing with us.
